We support eligible students to receive grants, bursaries and scholarships, enabling them make the most out of their learning and overall student life experience. Alongside this, the University provides free and accessible healthcare and wellbeing to all staff and students (Home and International).

Key facts for how we are achieving SDG1

  • We provided financial aid to over 6,500 low income students in 2022
  • Sheffield is in the top 10 most affordable UK university cities according to Times Higher Education 
  • The University works with 800 students a year from selected schools across a range of access programmes
  • 22% of our home undergraduate students come from low income households in 2022
  • Signatory of the Care Leaver Covenant, providing enhanced support for students arriving at university from a care background
  • Signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant, which ensures members of the Armed Forces community are treated fairly in our communities, economy and society
  • As of August 2022 our minimum pay rate is currently £11.03 per hour, which is in excess of the Voluntary Living Wage Foundation’s recommendation

The Sheffield Political Economy Research Institute (SPERI) undertakes research, informed by diverse and innovative methods, to support economic change at local, regional and global level.

Education

Bursaries 

Undergraduate study bursaries 

  • We offer a range of financial support for undergraduate students from low income backgrounds, households and deprived areas (as defined by the Government) 
  • We also provide support for care leavers, estranged students and those students with caring responsibilities
  • We have several course specific bursaries 
  • We have £500 Â鶹ֱ²¥app Abroad Scholarships on offer to students in receipt of a University of Sheffield bursary who will go on a semester/year abroad in the 2022/23 academic year 

Postgraduate scholarships 

  • We offer over 100 scholarships worth £10,000 each for home fee-paying students starting a postgraduate course
  • We're offering 150 Experience Sheffield Scholarships worth £3,600 each for home fee paying students starting their studies in September 2022.

Students must meet certain criteria in order to be eligible for these scholarships, and are designed to ensure students they are financially supported whilst at university.

Â鶹ֱ²¥app Abroad Scholarships

We are excited to announce we have £500 scholarships on offer to students in receipt of a University of Sheffield bursary who will go on a year or semester abroad in the academic year 2022/23. These awards are being made to eligible students who are studying in the EU and those studying outside the EU by the end of June.

Access Sheffield

We recognise that academic abilities are not always reflected in A Level results, and that other wider factors are at play which influence the outcome of grades. At Sheffield, we offer additional support to prospective students who show academic potential at university, who meet certain eligibility criteria, by adjusting degree offers (of up to two grades below the standard course requirement) to these students to greater the chance of those students reaching the minimum entry requirements.


Partnerships 

Institute for Global Sustainable Development 

Improving accounting and employment practices across supply chains in the minority and majority world 

An interdisciplinary research team led by Professor Pauline Dibben carried out an ESRC funded research study of the automotive and textiles sectors in South Africa and Brazil. This work has led to publications and the transformation of policy and practice across countries in Europe, Africa and South America.Examples of change include the development of new training products by ABRH, the HR professional body for Brazil and Sheffield City Council’s use of the toolkit with its suppliers which contributed toward its accreditation by the Living Wage Foundation and an award for ethical procurement from the Chartered Institute for Purchasing and Supply.
