Stroke

Our stroke research specialises in rehabilitation trials to improve outcomes for patients, biomarker studies and preclinical stroke prevention therapy development

On

The challenge

Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and long-term disability affecting over 120,000 people in the UK every year. There are 1.3 million stroke survivors in the UK today.

We lead a programme of research developing models to screen new potential therapeutics for stroke and cerebrovascular disease including developing gene therapy approaches for stroke prevention and small molecules to stabilize carotid plaques.

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust admits around 1000 stroke patients a year and has one of the best stroke care pathways in the country. This presents an opportunity screen patients for clinical trials to translate new interventions for stoke recovery and rehabilitation.

Through our clinical research infrastructure partnerships, the , the NIHR Sheffield Clinical Research Facility, major industrial collaborations and UKRI funding we are developing biomarkers and trialling new interventions to improve stroke outcomes for patients.

Objectives

  • Identify and characterise novel stroke therapeutic targets
  • Develop computational, remote-monitoring and imaging methods for enhanced diagnosis and precision medicine
  • Evaluate novel drug regimens and interventions in acute stroke management, recovery and rehabilitation
